How Walrus Oil Validated Its Cult Wood-Care Product (and Caught a Gap in Its Own Clean Story)

About

Walrus Oil is a non-toxic, food-safe wood-care brand, founded in 2017 by an environmentalist woodworker, sold in all 50 states, and planting five trees for every order. This study put its best-selling Cutting Board Oil and its Furniture Oil in front of 45 industry experts.

The Challenge

A beloved DTC brand with a devoted following and a clean, eco-first mission, eyeing retail. Before scaling onto shelves, Walrus Oil needed to know: does the product hold up to scrutiny, does the premium eco positioning land, and what would keep it off a buyer’s shelf?

What We Did

A sampling study by The Product Lab with 45 industry experts, who used the oils on their own cutting boards and furniture, then reviewed product, packaging, positioning, and price.

What the Study Revealed

  • The product delivers. 80% rated it 4 or 5 stars, 74% would repurchase, and experts said it “worked immediately to give new life to my cutting board.” Many rated it superior to plain mineral oil: thicker, cleaner, easier to apply.

  • The premium eco brand resonates. The minimalist black packaging read “chic, luxurious,” the mission (non-toxic, tree-planting) earned real affinity, and the product proved genuinely easy to use (87%).

  • But the clean story has one gap. For a brand built on “non-toxic,” the hero Cutting Board Oil contains mineral oil, a petroleum product, and the most eco-conscious experts caught it: “I’m avoiding seed oils in my food, and here I’m smearing petroleum on the boards where I prep it.” A clear call to either offer a mineral-oil-free option or communicate the food-safety case head-on.

  • Two more fixes surfaced: the packaging is premium but hard to differentiate (the cutting board and furniture oils look too alike, and the dark design doesn’t pop on shelf), and the brand needs a clearer category home (experts split it across kitchen, cleaning supplies, home goods, and hardware).

Where Walrus Oil Is Now

Walrus Oil walked away with strong validation for a retail push, plus a sharp, ranked fix-list: resolve the mineral-oil tension in its clean story, differentiate the SKUs on shelf, and claim a clear category.

“The quality is 10/10. It worked immediately to give new life to my cutting board.”

“I’m a little disappointed the cutting board oil contains mineral oil. I’d love a version without it.”
